Fancy Colored Diamonds
Fancy Diamonds
Some of the rarest stones are Fancy Diamonds. For every 10,000 diamonds mined, only one is produced that could be considered "fancy colored". In an effort to separate naturally colored polished diamonds from white diamonds, the Gemological Institute of America coined the term Fancy. The richer in color fancy diamonds are, the more their value increases. Unlike white diamonds that are graded on a D-Z scale, fancy colored diamonds are graded on the degree of color richness. The GIA created a grading scale for fancy colored diamonds in the 1970s. They are referred to without the use of letters, but based on the degree of color saturation in the stone. Color saturation is rated as follows: faint, very light, light, fancy light, fancy, fancy dark, intense fancy, fancy deep and vivid fancy. Fancy colored diamonds can have different colors like yellow, pink, orange, light blue, red, black and purple among others.
Among these stones, the most popular are yellow diamonds, also known as canary diamonds. Many white diamonds that look yellow and are at the end of the list of ordinary diamonds (Y-Z) are not considered fancy yellow diamonds.
Fancy Pink Diamonds
Some of the most attractive fancy diamonds on the market are pink. Because they are so rare, pink diamonds are among the most precious stones one can buy. Among them, one can distinguish many shades, such as very light pink, light pink, fancy light pink, fancy pink, deep fancy pink, vivid fancy pink and deep fancy pink.
Fancy Green Diamonds
Fancy green diamonds are the rarest after red. Because green is a mixture of blue and yellow, green diamonds usually have shades of blue-green to yellow-green. They may also show some traces of gray and brown color.
Fancy Blue Diamonds
Fancy blue diamonds are the most valuable, but they are also on the list of rare colored diamonds on earth. Their colors range from light to very deep blue. The shades they contain are: light blue, very light blue, light blue, fancy light blue, fancy blue, deep fancy blue, dark fancy blue, deep fancy blue and vivid fancy blue.
Fancy Orange Diamonds
Traces and shades of brown, yellow and pink are often found in orange diamonds. These diamonds are usually produced at the Argyle mine in Australia or South Africa. They may contain the following shades: fancy orange, bright fancy orange, vivid fancy orange, deep fancy orange and dark fancy orange.
Fancy Brown Diamonds
Due to some change in the molecular structure of the stone, some diamonds are brown and are called fancy brown diamonds or chocolate diamonds. Those that contain a slight brown color are called champagne diamonds and those that have orange hues are called cognac diamonds.
Fancy Yellow Diamonds
They are often called canary diamonds, and the deeper the yellow the more expensive they are. This is the most popular fancy color.
