Wearing Jewelry
People wear jewelries every day but only few know how to preserve and take proper care of them. Below we present you some tips and guidelines to have in mind when wearing jewelry:

  • Remove Jewelry During Tasks
You should better avoid wearing jewelry while doing manual tasks in order to prevent contact with chemicals or other cleaning fluids or even physical damage. Cleaning the house, kitchen work or gardening are tasks that could injure your jewelry.

  • Put Jewelry On After Applying Makeup
All kind of cosmetics such as hairspray, perfumes and lotion may contain ingredients that can often damage your jewelry. So, wear your jewelries on after applying these materials in order to limit the exposure.

  • Don't Wear Jewelry In Swimming Pools and Spas
It’s better to remove jewelry before entering a pool or a spa. All pools use chlorinated water that might react with the metals of your jewelry causing discoloration or even structural damage.

  • Contact Sports and Jewelry Don't Mix
During sports it’s recommended to remove all jewelry. That way no only you will secure the safety of your jewelry from damage but also yours and your co-players from injuries.

Cleaning Jewelry
If you wear your jewelries on a daily bases regular cleaning and effort is required in order to keep them looking good. Here are some basic tips that may help you:

  • Remove Your Jewelry Before Bathing
You should better take off all your jewelry before bathing or cleaning. Sometimes a film is formed on jewelry making them look dull and dingy. This is mostly caused by soap or other cleaning products. By removing our jewelry you minimize the possibilities of formation of this film and protect them.

  • Use Jewelry Polishing Cloths for Best Results
If you want to polish your jewelry better do it with a jewelry polishing cloth. You can use any other kind of cloth but may not have the best results. Better avoid using paper or tissue because they may cause scratches.

  • Clean Your Jewelry With Care
In order to keep your jewelry’s condition well you can try and clean it on your own. But you need to be careful. You can buy a commercial cleaning product from a jeweler or you try rubbing alcohol which makes wonders. At all costs don’t ever use bleach or any similar product because it can destroy your jewelry.

  • Use Warm Water to Clean Jewelry
At any case when cleaning your own jewelry better use warm water. If using hot water reaction can be caused between the cleaning product and the water because of the high temperature resulting discoloration.

  • Avoid Cleaning Damaged Jewelry
At any case, never try and clean a jewelry that is cracked, damaged or broken. By applying any cleaning product is likely to worsen the damage. Better set the jewelry aside for repair.

  • Inspect Your Jewelry Regularly
Like everything else it’s a good idea every now and then to have your jewelry professionally cleaned but also checked and inspected for any possible damages. That way you prevent any further damage or loss and keep all your jewelry in excellent condition.

  • Jewelry Repair Pricing
When a jeweler quotes his pricing about doing repair work from a price book usually means he is experienced and has researched his investment in time and materials in order to have his job done correctly. This way you can ensure about the quality of his work in a reasonable price.

  • Observe the Jewelry Take-in Procedures
Before leaving a jewelry for repair always ask the jeweler about the procedure of the exact item’s repair. You may keep notes and closely observe the jewelry take-in procedure in order to ensure that the repair will be done correctly.

  • Inspect Your Jewelry at Pickup
Always inspect your jewelry before picking them up. Check if you have accepted the correct piece of jewelry and observe if the repair is made as requested. Ensure that your jewelry has been cleaned and polished as if it’s new.

Storing Jewelry
Storing your jewelry correctly is a way to prevent any unwanting loss or damage but also a way to keep them safe and well organized. Here are some suggestions that will keep your jewelry organized and orderly:

  • Keep Your Jewelry Secure
In order to store your jewelry correctly the first thing you have to do is try to prevent them from moving around at the storage box. Fabric-lined jewelry boxes are perfect but you use a shoebox and pieces of fabric between the items.

  • Prevent Your Jewelry from Tarnishing
Both silver and gold jewelry sometimes tarnish. To prevent that you can place anti-tarnish strips in your jewelry storage box to absorb oxidants that cause tarnishing and discoloration.

  • Inventory Your Jewelry
Unfortunately, jewelry can get lost or stolen. Taking a regular inventory can be incredibly useful when making an insurance claim or filing a police report. A photograph, a written physical description of each piece and its cost is ideal. Furthermore, store that information apart from your jewelry in the event it is taken too.
Making an inventory of your jewelry can be useful in many possible ways. Sometimes, jewelry can get lost or stolen but having an inventory can be a real help. Take a photo of the jewelry, write a small description of each piece and its value. Store the list apart from your jewelry.

  • When Travelling with Jewelry, Use a Case
Storing correctly your jewelry is very important while traveling. A travel case can be very useful and will protect them from any possible damage. You are going to be able to find many travelling cases mostly made of fabric or leather that can carry jewelry of all types and are easy to store inside your suitcase.
