Wearing Jewelry
People wear jewelry every day, but only a few know how to maintain it and take proper care of it. Below are some tips and guidelines to keep in mind when wearing jewelry:
Remove jewelry during work
You should better avoid wearing jewelry while doing manual work to avoid contact with chemicals or other cleaning fluids or even injury to the jewelry. Cleaning the house, working in the kitchen or gardening are the jobs that could injure your jewelry.
Wear your jewelry after makeup
All kinds of cosmetics, such as nail polish, perfumes and lotions can contain ingredients that can damage your jewelry. So wear your jewelry after applying these products to limit your exposure to them.
Do not wear jewelry in Pools and Spas
It is best to remove jewelry before entering a pool or spa. All pools use chlorinated water which may react with the metals in your jewelry and cause discoloration or even some minor damage.
Do not wear jewelry when exercising:
During sports it is recommended to remove your jewelry. This way you will not only ensure the safety of your jewelry from damage, but also you and your teammates from injury.
Jewelry Cleaning
If you wear your jewelry on a daily basis, it takes regular cleaning and effort to keep it in good condition. Here are some basic tips that may help:
Remove your jewelry before you bathe
It is best to remove all your jewelry before bathing or while cleaning. Sometimes, a coating forms on the jewelry making it look dull and dark. This is mainly caused by soaps or other cleaning products. By removing your jewelry you minimize the chances of this coating forming and protect it.
Use jewelry cleaning cloths for best results
If you want to polish your jewelry better do it with a special jewelry cleaning cloth. You can use any other type of fabric, but you won't get the best results. It is better to avoid using paper or paper towels, as they can cause scratches from various fibers that they may contain.
Clean your jewelry with Care
In order to maintain the condition of your jewelry you can try to clean it yourself. But you have to be careful. You can buy a commercial cleaning product from a jewelry store or try rubbing alcohol which works wonders. Under no circumstances should you use bleach or any similar product because it can damage your jewelry.
Use lukewarm water to clean the jewelry
In any case, when cleaning your jewelry, it is best to use lukewarm water. If you use hot water it may cause a reaction between the cleaning product and the water, due to the high temperature, and cause discoloration of the jewelry.
Avoid cleaning damaged jewelry
In any case, never attempt to clean a piece of jewelry that has been scratched, damaged, or broken. Applying any cleaning product is likely to make the damage worse. Better put it aside for repair.
Inspect your jewelry regularly
Like everything else it's a good idea to have your jewelry professionally cleaned every now and then, as well as checked and inspected for damage. This way you avoid further damage or loss and keep all your jewelery in perfect condition.
Jewelry repair
It is important to maintain your jewelry regularly as well as repair it. At DiamondJools we have a very well trained and experienced staff available to repair your jewelery at any time. However, if you are unable to bring or ship your jewelry to us, we provide a few more instructions that you may find helpful:
Prevent damage
In order to avoid the need for repair the best way is prevention. A little inspection of your jewelry can help you find any minor damage and fix it before it gets worse. Doing so will not only ensure that your jewelry is in good condition, but minimize potential repair costs.
Look for reviews and suggestions
Before deciding which jeweler to repair your jewelry in, it is better to look for comments and reviews about their work. Asking a few questions about the repair process is always a good way to learn and be confident in your jeweler and their experience.
Cost of Repair
When a jeweler quotes a repair cost directly for their work and has standard prices it usually means they are experienced and have researched the time and materials needed to get their job done right. This way you can be sure of the quality of his work in relation to the price.
Note the repair method
Before giving a piece of jewelry for repair always ask the jeweler to explain the process of repairing the expensive piece of jewelry. You can take notes and monitor the process closely to ensure that the repair is done correctly.
Check the jewelry before you receive it
Always inspect your jewelry before receiving it. Make sure you get the right piece of jewelry and observe if the repair was done as requested. Make sure your jewelry is cleaned and polished like new.
Storing the jewelry
Storing your jewelry properly is one way to prevent any loss or damage, but also one way to keep it safe and well organized. Here are some suggestions to keep your jewelry organized and tidy:
Keep your jewelry safe
To store your jewelry properly the first thing you have to do is try to prevent it from moving around in the storage box. Fabric-lined jewelry boxes are perfect, but you can also use a shoe box and pieces of fabric between items.
Prevent your jewelry from tarnishing
Both silver and gold jewelry sometimes tarnish. To avoid this, you can place special products recommended by your jeweler in your jewelry storage box that absorb the oxides that cause tarnishing and discoloration.
List your jewelry
Taking an inventory of your jewelry can be helpful in many ways. Sometimes, jewelry can get lost or stolen, but having a list of it can be a real help. Take a photo of the jewelry, write a short description of each piece and its value. Save the list, save your jewelry just in case.
On your travels, use a storage case
Proper storage of your jewelry is very important while traveling. A travel case can be very useful and will protect them from any damage. You can find many travel cases that are mostly made of fabric or leather and you can carry all types of jewelry and store them easily inside your suitcase.
We hope our tips help you keep your jewelry organized and safe. If you need more information contact us by email.
